Attack on Human Dignity
The Educational Portal of the Americas affirms its support to the people and institutions of Spain after the terrorist acts that have had devastating consequences to our sister nation. The atrocious attacks in Madrid were not simply against a country or town, but rather against all of humanity. Happiness is greater when shared, and pain is less painful when shared. In this time of suffering and helplessness we offer our brothers in Spain our deepest sympathy and support. Understanding is the ability to think and act flexibly with what one knows This definition is the basis of Education for Understanding and the topic of the editorial this month. Currently, our schools and methods of teaching are not organized to promote understanding. Years of academic research and practical experience show that understanding is a challenge both in and outside of schools. Obviously understanding does not just take place within a scholarly learning environment, but it is a responsibility of the schools to help construct it. Learning for understanding requires learning by doing. It is impossible to understand simply by receiving information, although clearly basic information is necessary. Learning for understanding implies committing oneself through reflective action, with actions that build understanding. http://www.educoas.org/portal/en/tema/editorial/abr04.aspx?culture=en&tabindex=36&childindex=0 2004 Award for Innovative Education in the Americas Nominations for the 2004 Award for Innovative Education in the Americas are being accepted online through April 30.
